Jarred Black, our General Manager, took over as general manager of Larry H. Miller Volkswagen in Lakewood, Colo., in May 2013.

"During the next seven months, he applied the lessons learned in his previous job as a used-car manager to drive the dealership to record new- and used-vehicle sales volumes, record service and parts gross profits and the dealership's second-best net income on record as new and used volume grew to about 1,350 units from about 1,100 in 2012." - autonews.com

That is an excerpt from the Automotive News. Jarred was named to Automotive News’ 40 Under 40: Retail which recognizes dynamic individuals in automotive dealerships under the age of 40.

Automotive News evaluated nominations from across the U.S. and Canada and identified the top performers in a large field of high caliber talent at dealerships. These dynamic employees were profiled in the July 14 issue of Automotive News. Jarred was one of them.

How does it feel to win Dealer of the Year in your first year as General Manager?

It feels great. This definitely is one of the most prestigious awards I have won in my young career because this business is all about the customer and I wouldn’t have received this award if it wasn’t for all the satisfied customer reviews! To be honest, I owe it all to my staff. This award is all about them and they are the ones that received this award.

As a General Manager, what does this award mean to the store?

This award is priceless. I look at it as the “customer choice” award, since this is truly based on my customers’ reviews! There isn’t a better honor than to be able to tell your customer we have been the only dealer in Colorado to be voted the DealerRater ‘Dealer of the Year’ and it is based on customer reviews of how they were treated in our Sales, Parts and Service departments.

My staff. I have the most amazing, experienced, unique staff in the country. I would put my crew up against any staff in the country. Without them this award wouldn’t be possible and I know they are the heartbeat of the dealership!

Work Options for Women – WOW Indeed

We love celebrating and rewarding non-profit organizations making a difference in our community with donations gathered from employees at Larry H. Miller Volkswagen. When we met the remarkable group of people from Work Options for Women, we were thrilled to offer them $3,500 for changing the lives of our neighbors who are in need of professional guidance and a plan for self-sufficiency.

The classes offered at Work Options for Women (WOW) teach students:

·      how to cook from scratch with wholesome ingredients

·      communication in a professional setting

·      job skills and training (professional appearance, showing up on time, adjusting schedules to meet the needs of their (future) job(s), being respectful and respected)

·      resume and job application assistance

·      interview skills and practice

·      job placement assistance

·      hands-on experience as professionals in the food service industry

·      balancing a personal budget

The women attending this program have varied backgrounds with their paths intersecting at poverty, homelessness, finding trouble with the law, missing an education and lacking the skills to interview for a job (and keeping a job), but all of them share the need to improve their lives for themselves and their families. For many, this is the last resort for help, and the first step they’ve taken to completely changing the course of their lives.

It’s no secret the staff love their students and their jobs by their constant praise and enthusiasm when discussing the strides they make. Obviously, witnessing each amazing transformation is exceptionally rewarding, especially when some of the students have multiple hurdles to jump through just to participate in this program.

Operating WOW is not cheap and the students attending this program attend it for free, so the generosity of private donors, area businesses, and revenues from WOW Café and Café Options keep the program running. About forty-four percent of the revenues from Café Options and the WOW Café fund the programs for WOW.  Other avenues of support include cooking classes at Café Options, fundraisers and dining events, team building courses, and donations from area residents and businesses.

WOW Café is the onsite cafeteria located in the heart of the Denver Human Services building, also the headquarters of Work Options for Women’s classrooms and kitchen. The WOW Café is the first step for the students in their culinary education. It’s where they learn to prepare meals from scratch, practice their customer service skills, and experience the art of team work as they serve breakfast and lunch at the various food stations. The students prepare fresh food selections and also take food orders for any of the 800 employees in this building.

Café Options is a fast casual restaurant in the heart of downtown Denver operating as a branch of Work Options for Women, which also employs many students who have completed the culinary program through WOW. This café serves breakfast and lunch to the bustling crowds of professionals and tourists Monday through Friday.

Once the students complete their culinary education (averaging 9 weeks to complete, especially if they participate in an internship), they may join in a graduation ceremony. For many, this is the first time they’ve graduated from anything, and for some it’s the first graduation (of any kind) for a member of their family. It’s an emotional day, marking the end of a former life of struggles and doubt and a celebration of hope for a better life and future.

WOW alumni have a tremendous support system from the WOW staff. No one is ever turned away when they need help with job placement, updating their resume, additional training, or counseling. Some have been invited back to the WOW “campus” to help train the new batch of students, offering a much-needed example of the success from the program and what lies ahead.

If you could pick any vehicle off the lot, what would it be? Volkswagen Touareg TDI R LINE

What is your favorite feature of the Touareg TDI R-LINE? My favorite feature is the TDI (turbo diesel injection) I commute from Colorado Springs and made six trips on one tank of gas!!!!

When did your passion for Volkswagen begin? The day I started, my employees and customers are so passionate about this brand it made me realize how special the culture is!

Why would you pick a Volkswagen over another brand? Fuel efficiency, really fun to drive, great in this climate, they last forever. Volkswagen just came out with a commercial about how they have more cars on the road with over 100,000 miles than any other manufacturer! That's a big statement !!

What is your favorite road trip destination? I am a BIG fan of driving back home to Albuquerque, New Mexico

What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time? Coach my 10 year old sons basketball team, watch my 6 year old do dance and gymnastics and watch my 2 year old do gymnastics, watch sports and go to sporting events and spend time with my wife and kids doing anything!!

If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go? The Bahamas and Hawaii (I plan on going to both)

What would you consider your special talent? Well I have been in the car business since I was 18 and before that I was all about sports and being an athlete. I would have to say being sucessful at a young age, I become a general manager at age 27 which I believe is a record in the Larry H Miller group!

Partnering with Non-profits to Help Our Community

Working for the Larry H. Miller Group offers a variety of ways to support non-profits in our community.  Employees at LHM Volkswagen Lakewood have the option of donating a portion of their income to the Larry H. Miller Charities fund, which is dispersed to local non-profit groups focusing on the needs of women and children’s issues with an emphasis on health and education.

Larry H. Miller was devoted to making the world a better place, saying “Go about doing good until there is too much good in the world.”

Recently, our employees donated $5,000 to The Arvada Community Food Bank to help support their “Feeding the Future Backpack” program, which provides food to children at 13 Arvada and Wheat Ridge elementary schools each weekend for the entire school year.  These schools have a high percentage of children on the “Free and Reduced Lunch” programs.  For many of these students, the majority of their food comes from the meals served while they’re in school. 

LHMVW employees learn more about the food bank and the programs they offer to the community.

Donating $100 covers the costs of one child for the school year. Each Friday, the participating children receive a sack filled with two breakfast items, two lunch items, 2 snacks, 1 fresh or canned fruit and one canned vegetable.

The Arvada Community Food Bank has seen a 30% increase in demand to help feed area children.  The food bank is also supported by a network of volunteers who cover everything from sorting and cleaning food donations, stocking shelves, food distribution, and assisting clients with other miscellaneous needs.
